I have the Triple Nothingness Martial Technique. No matter how much you try, you can’t do anything to me…” Before he could finish, a huge Xwem Chessboard appeared beneath him, expanding rapidly. His eyes transitioned to man with the translucent blade, X. X was no taller than 5 and half feet. Reyes shot it in the radar array from thirty feet away. One round. The array exploded in a shower of sparks, and the Trooper staggered, suddenly blind. Jax finished it with his axe handle, driving the blunt iron straight down onto the exposed neck joint until the mech folded. Eight seconds total. "Move," Dax said, already running.

The machine collapsed into the mud, its gears hissing as the black fluid leaked into the snow. But there were eleven more. I fell back toward the longhouse, my gray-stained palm burning as the "Thirteenth resonance" tried to surface one last time. I looked at the stranger’s book, open on the ledger-table.
