🦪 DALE LAZARUS 🦪 Footsteps move closer to me, and I slam my eyes shut, still trying to figure out my exact location or trace the voice to the owner. One thing is for sure: there is indeed a stutter in my brain. “You ever wonder why your room clock skips five minutes every time you blink? Or why does people’s voice sound like it’s coming from under the swimming pool? It’s not the adrenaline,” the voice continues, and I heighten my senses.

Goodness, this is so confusing! "No, I’m not crazy! And I still won’t talk to you!" I said firmly. I quickly put my earphones into my ears and pressed the play button on my music player, pretending that I was listening to music and didn’t hear anything or see anything around me. But in reality, my earphones were broken! The speakers didn’t work at all anymore, so there was no music playing. I just didn’t want to talk to him or have anything to do with him, because it made me feel uncomfortable and uneasy just being around him. I don’t know why, but whenever I hear his voice, it gives me that creepy feeling. It sounds strange and mysterious, and I know it probably sounds like I’m overreacting

It masks the whine. I’ve tried earplugs, and it doesn’t stop it. So, I’ve assumed it’s part of a condition called tinnitus. I don’t hear ring bells, just a steady ‘e’ sound at a pitch only electronics can make. Non-medical individuals have suggested that I possess the ability to detect the sound of electricity. Doctors tell me I’m imagining things. Lovely and who should I believe? It’s annoying and I’m not chasing windmills. So, am I crazy? Or hearing something others aren’t?

Loud. Everything was suddenly so loud. The thunk, thunk of the water hitting the bottom of the basin as it dripped from the tap was almost deafening and the chatter of the refrigerator was triple its usual volume. There was a low hum all around her as if she could hear the electricity within the walls. Hell, she even swore she could hear the sounds of tyres on the asphalt down the road. It was impossible, you could hardly hear the cars passing the end of the driveway let alone hear them making a turn a little way down the road.

It seems like reality has been quieted, I literally can't hear anything, not even my own breathing. "It's an anxiety attack," says my inner gathering, trying to clear up the absence of sound introduced by my eardrums. I'm going to agree with him when there's something out of nowhere, a commotion... no. It's something different, something I can't comprehend or perceive, yet that somehow makes me start running towards the pools.

The more I tried to recall what happened, the more the ache was. "What the hell is this?" I groaned closing my eyes as I leaned back in the ground in pain. A sharp ringing sound echoed in my ear continuously making me want to scream. I sat on the bare earth for a while with both hands pressed hard in my ears to suppress the sound and calm my panicked heart down.

"Uh, uh-uh-uh..." There was a strange ringing sound in my ears, and for a moment I thought it was a hallucination; it sounded like the movement of tree branches shaking and crashing against each other, and like the sound of a knife cutting through a curtain, and like the noise of nails scratching a blackboard, unpleasant and appalling. After listening to it, I finally realized in a daze that it was my own huffing and puffing sound. I couldn't control it, my entire respiratory system was like a leaky motor, revving faster and faster, on the verge of falling apart.

A strange feeling accompanied him as well, and he also heard an unknown humming sound. ~buzzzzz buzzz~ ~buzzz buzzz~ The buzzing sound was very annoying since it was not constant at all. It kept reverberating in his ears as he walked. The volume and the pitch of the noise both were fluctuating. He tried very hard to search, but he couldn't find the origin of that sound. After not being able to locate the sound, he decided to let go and keep moving forward.

Everything felt surreal, almost dreamlike; the rich, earthy scent of damp soil was intoxicating, and the soft rustling of dry leaves beneath my feet added an oddly comforting soundtrack to my bewildering predicament. “Come on, open your heart and just let me in,” the voice urged again, its persistence wrapping around me like a cozy blanket on a chilly night. Yet, truthfully, the constant repetition made my head feel like it was caught in a chaotic symphony; the ringing intensified, transforming into a deep, relentless drumbeat, an urgent plea that felt both familiar and completely baffling.
