There was a strange ringing sound in my ears, and for a moment I thought it was a hallucination; it sounded like the movement of tree branches shaking and crashing against each other, and like the sound of a knife cutting through a curtain, and like the noise of nails scratching a blackboard, unpleasant and appalling. After listening to it, I finally realized in a daze that it was my own huffing and puffing sound.
