I nod. “Completely.”
She exhales shakily, looking down at the table. “I don’t deserve this.”
“No,” I say honestly. “You don’t.”
A small, broken laugh escapes her. She looks up at me, eyes glassy. “Then why?”
I hold her gaze. “Because sometimes, mercy is human.”
She presses her lips together. And then, slowly, she nods.
