When the steam cleared, the man was gone. Standing in his place was a nightmare carved from obsidian. The Midnight Wolf was the size of a warhorse. His fur was pitch-black, absorbing the faint moonlight, making him look like a hole torn in the fabric of the blizzard. His eyes burned with a fierce, intelligent gold. He shook out his massive coat, sending a spray of melted snow into the air, and lowered his massive head to look at Valen. Valen didn't run. He let go of my leg and took a tentative step forward.

But as long as Kade could set foot within Nightshade’s borders, how could I ever sleep peacefully? Either way, I knew I would have to leave the party before midnight now. I’m in the pitch black again and cannot move. I hear a growl and see a pair of yellow eyes in the darkness. I’ve never been so scared, all I wanted was the light to come back. The flames start reigniting on the walls and I make eye contact with the most beautiful white wolf I’ve ever seen. It’s walking towards me growling; all of the hair standing up on its back. The weight of the foot comes off my back and I rush to my feet. “Did you make a friend? How fun now I get it to kill you both.” The voice growls again.

It was a sight I had yearned to witness for five long years—a sight that filled me with a sense of contentment and longing all at once. As I stood by the bedside, a voice echoed within me—a voice that was both mine and yet separate. It was the voice of the wolf that resided within me, a part of my very essence. The wolf, a creature of raw instinct and unwavering loyalty, had remained silent for so long, kept at bay by the seal I had placed upon it. But tonight, in the presence of the woman I loved and our pup, the wolf's presence could not be contained any longer. As annoying as their banters were, I missed being able to hear my wolves in my head. Anyway, I held Kieran's right hand tightly with both my hands, maintaining eye contact with him as I did. He finally spoke,his voice filled with indifference. His uncaring attitude shattered something in me. A surge of emotion swam through me, betrayal,heartbreak,rage. I heard several gasps as a sudden light erupted within me,surging through my veins like wildfire.. My body trembled as the sudden change took over me,every muscle twisting and reshaping as power and pain collided. I gasped,my scream shifting into a low growl. When the light faded,I stood there on four legs,although I was smaller than most wolves,my red fur shimmered with an ethereal glow,and my eyes burned with defiance. The crowd stared,And for the first time,I felt whole.

The forest explodes around us. They come out of the shadows in blurs of motion. Not animals. Not trained wolves either. Rogues. Their movements are jerky, hungry, and desperate, but fast too fast. Five of them. Surrounding us before I even take a full breath. Jaxon’s growl rips through the night, a sound that makes the hair rise on the back of my neck. Half human, half wolf, all Alpha. “Stay behind me.” My instincts scream to listen. To obey. But stubbornness surges hotter. I grab a fallen branch, wrapping both hands around it like it’s a sword.
