“We can make up stories, say anything to ourselves.” Tina agreed with the gesture of changing the subject; they had plenty of things to bother them as it was. They started talking engaging themselves in telling real and imaginary stories and making jokes while the working of the rest of the world, went on, with their wars. Yet as people were engaged in conversations, the roaring of soldiers and other war noises penetrated through the thick skin and served as a constant reminder of their position.

Every thirty minutes he would give the reminder – Hydrate. By the end of the deployment, it had become a running joke. No matter what the question was, the answer was hydrate. What time is it? Hydrate. What’s for dinner? Hydrate. Why did the chicken cross the road?

Marrying a man like him would be a point of pride for any woman! Howard chuckled, "Well, you could say that." "I just knew it! Right when I saw you, I could tell you were no average Joe!" Nance said, her eyes full of admiration. "Mr. Lincoln, would you mind sharing some stories about life in the camp? A lot of us here really look up to soldiers!" chimed in another colleague, her eyes sparkling with interest. "Absolutely!" Howard agreed with a nod and a smile, then began to regale them with some of the lighter tales from his time in the service.

I don't think I will be able to forgive myself if another person gets hurt because of me again. "A little shot on an arm is not fatal." He stated flatly, making me clench my teeth so hard that they hurt, "And these scars-" He looked down on his body, my eyes following his movements, "I was in the military and they are pretty common amongst the soldiers. They are a great honor. I fought for my country and whenever I look at them, I am reminded of all those times. Those were the best times of my life."

How shameless of me. We spent the day hearing Xiao’s tales during his days as a General and frankly, I was very interested. He also told me how warfare and territory were settled back in the day, and it was surprising because it was all so different. It all sounded so brutal, so inhumane, yet so sly.

He resembled a lost puppy. A chuckle escaped me, and I forgot the sound of my own laughter before that. There was no room for laughter in war, not even with my pack members in the little moments of silence we shared between battles. In the former years, it was nothing but blood and violence, and slaughter soon replaced any shred of laughter. I soon forgot what the feeling of a smile felt like; the feeling of your lips spreading to the edges of my face.The delight of helping a little boy from a hole and not a wounded soldier from my pack was almost too much to handle.
