We dismounted built a fire from the last dry wood we could scavenge low flames that barely pushed back the dark. Flame stirred as I settled her near the fire silver violet eyes opening glowing faintly. “Mommy?” she whispered tiny voice sleepy, trusting. I knelt brushing her cheek. “Soon, little flame. Mommy’s coming.” She smiled small vines curling tighter around my wrist then Kael’s then drifting toward Riven. Riven knelt letting the vine touch his palm. “Rest, little flame,” he whispered. “We’ve got you.” Flame sighed eyes closing light dimming again.

Ember is dressed in fire-forged armor, standing over my chained body. “You were always too soft, Bastion.” She says. “Too foolish and self-centered to see what I really needed.” The same man stands behind her, arms folded, looking like a muscle-bound god. “You want me to kill him, Flame?” She smiles “No. let him rot. He was never worth my time.” The vision faded and I screamed, not out loud, my dry throat couldn’t handle it. But inside, where it counts. Where she wants it to hurt.

“And you walked in knowing I’d use it.” She hated that he was right. “What kind of work?” she asked. For ten days, this black-sand paradise with its steaming geothermal pools and ancient lava fields would witness Lila’s ultimate breaking. She arrived at dusk, naked except for her silver collar and a sheer black robe that billowed in the warm volcanic wind. The air smelled of sulfur, salt, and distant smoke. With a final flourish, she extinguished the flames, leaving only a faint wisp of smoke in their wake. Elara, the newcomer with the Celestial Flames, stepped forward next.
