Lucian Voss I was still holding the paper in my hand long after the door closed behind me. I didn’t even realize it at first, but my fingers had tightened around it like I was afraid of letting it go. It was a child’s drawing, done in crayon, the lines uneven and rough. There were three stick figures. One tall figure was labeled “Mr. Lucian.” The next was a woman with long hair, drawn with wide strokes and labeled “Mama.” Between them stood a small boy with messy curls and a wide smile. He had no label because I didn’t need one.

**Mia:** “Good.” She turns back to her doodles, but now the vines she’s drawing have tiny golden flames curling through them. I watch for a second, then add a small real spark to the corner of my page—controlled, just enough to leave a faint scorch mark shaped like a leaf. She notices, eyes widening, then laughs quietly—head down so Mrs. Hale doesn’t see. The rest of class passes with notes, discussion, Mrs. Hale asking questions about love at first sight and fate.

Zayn pulled out a crumpled piece of paper, smoothing it out on the table. It was a drawing. Simple. Uneven lines. Bright colors. Three figures. Aira recognized it immediately. Zayn pointed at it proudly. “This is me. And that’s Mum. And… that’s you.” Lucien’s gaze fixed on the drawing. For a moment, he didn’t speak. His fingers moved slightly, as if he wanted to touch the paper but stopped himself. “And you made this?” he asked. Zayn nodded. “Yes.” Lucien’s expression didn’t change much.

Poor girl was a slave! “Luc, ready to leave?” I called out as I padded down the stairs to the living room, to find my little man bent with his attention on the paper he was coloring. I tiptoed before peeking from his shoulder, then smiled at the little doodles he was drawing on the picture. The back ground was green, the sky blue with flowers all around. The daddy doodle wore a blue cape, with a bold S on the chest, and the mommy doodle wore a red cape with the same S on the chest and between them was a small boy. Emotions clogged my throat at the sight of the picture;

He was too handsome for an ugly person like me. I looked away from them. On my way home, I spot an elderly guy with a huge sign along the road, written, "Beware of the beast who hides in human skin that walks among us." I didn't understand why I was so frightened when I read it. Briggs, the elderly guy, was insane; he lost his mind when his daughter went missing. Nothing he wrote on that piece of cardboard was sane. Arriving home, I went straight to my room and locked myself in. I sat at my desktop and typed in the search engine, "Beast who hides in human skin."

I heard the scratch of a drawer, the pad of feet, and she was back in thirty seconds with a fistful of crayons and a folded piece of brown paper she smoothed flat on the table. She started drawing. I watched her work. A house. A stick figure with long hair. Another beside it, taller. A small one between them. "What are you drawing?" "Us." She selected a blue crayon. "I'm drawing us in your big house." Something pressed against the inside of my chest. The house was very large with a mess of flowers to one side. The other side was a row of careful green strokes dotted with red circles that were probably tomatoes.

She drank her tea and listened and occasionally looked at Lily with the particular expression of someone who was seeing something they had not expected and finding it unexpectedly good. Lily caught her looking at one point. “Do you want to see my drawing,” Lily asked her. Juliana looked slightly surprised. “Yes,” she said. “I would.” Lily climbed down and went to the fridge and pulled the drawing off and brought it to Juliana and stood beside her explaining each part of it in detail. The green cloud was the apple tree. The purple rectangle was the swing. The tall figures were everyone and the small one was Mr. Bear. Juliana listened to every word seriously.

Nikki and I will be sharing a bedroom since the room is pretty big and we love spending quiet time together. "Hey, Mia. How did it go today? Finished your drawing?" Nikki asks as she makes her way to me on our line. "Yeah. Almost, I just need to color it when we get home." I reply as I take out my notepad and show her the picture I was drawing. It was a picture of a little fairy with flowers all around, wearing a flower dress. I love drawing fairies. I love drawing anything for that matter, but fairies and mythical creatures are my favorite.
