I am an earth dragon, and I’ve seen all types of stone, but this substance was outside my experience. It is a type of shaped stone, perfectly formed, its grooves determining not only the course of our platform, but the speed of its descent. I went outside, there had to be a guest toilet somewhere down the hall. I padded out of the room on bare feet, searching for the toilet. After centuries it probably isn’t as protected as it was before. The stone slowly changes to skin. I drop to my knees and move my arms. I didn’t think I would be sore after being in stone. The elders said it would feel as though I woke up from a nap. Instead, it feels as though I was in a tight space, unable to move for far too long. Getting off the floor, I stand where my mother hid the special gem she created. I quickly find it under the alter I was standing on and feel its magic. It has enough charge to last me a couple of days, depending on how much magic I use.

Lira (POV) The corridor narrows and twists. It buckles into a stairwell resembling the ribs made of stone arching like the cracked spine of something long dead and calcified. Each stone step is carved with old magic—runes so deep and jagged they look like they were gouged in by claw, not hand. In between them sits teeth. Real ones. Wolf fangs. Human molars. Bone shards lashed into the stone like a mouth waiting to close on the first idiot stupid enough to climb.
