Max watched them go, ears flicking, eyes bright. He looked at Luca, who finally touched him, resting his fingers on Max’s neck. “I’m good,” Luca murmured. Max leaned into it once, then turned away, as if satisfied.
Frankie and Tony returned near midnight. Frankie had blood on his shirt and dirt on his shoulder. His face was calm, but his eyes were too bright and fixed. Tony looked worse, tired and worn.
Frankie spoke to Tony in a low voice first. “Get them something stronger than coffee,” he said. “Probably got your favorite, but nothing for the shock.”
