“You know something, kiddo? When I was your age, I thought monsters lived under the bed.”
He smiled faintly. “They don’t?”
She laughed softly. “No. Sometimes they live inside us. But that doesn’t mean we’re bad. It just means we’re strong enough to keep them company.”
He giggled, curling against her shoulder, his power dimming like the last spark of a dying fire. Within minutes, he was asleep.
Vera sat there for a while, still holding him, humming an old lullaby. I’d heard her sing it before—years ago, when Damon was still a baby. It sounded the same but heavier now, full of the weight of everything we’d survived.
