Plopping down next to him I leaned back, and he slung his arm around the back of the couch, his hand resting easily on my shoulder. “Now that we are all here” Alpha Alex said, eyes scanning the room, “Xavier, our librarian can tell us what is going on.” He nodded to the older man as he gestured him to sit in his chair, Xavier shuffled slowly and sank into Alex’s oversized chair. His cloudy eyes looked at each one of us in turn, seeming to see through us, into us. “I had thought it a myth, something I read once in an old book; but now I find it happening in front of my eyes.” He set a barely held together book on the table, the binding frayed and in danger of falling apart at any moment.

The Shadow with long flowing black hair and crimson eyes sneers, licking the blood of the she-wolf from his claws with a forked tongue. “Who would have thought Ottawa would be easy to enter once all the snow began to melt?” His companion chuckles out, his voice distorted with a gurgling.

Xander chuckled softly, his eyes gleaming with malicious delight. "Rescue, you say? Oh, how predictable. But know this, Dakota, the shadows are my ally. I command them, and they will be your undoing." As Xander finished speaking, the room plunged into darkness, enveloped by an inky blackness that seemed to devour all light. Dakota's heart raced as he relied on his acute senses to navigate through the void, his movements cautious yet purposeful.

Hunters. “Shadowthorn sends a message!” one roared. “The Alpha wants his heirs!” Aria shoved the twins behind her, blades already drawn. “Over my dead body.” Luka’s shadows flared. Lila growled, tiny body vibrating with power. The lead hunter lunged. Aria met him mid air, driving both blades into his chest. Hot blood sprayed across her face. She twisted, using his momentum to slam him into the second attacker. Luka’s shadows wrapped the third wolf’s legs, yanking him down. Lila pounced, ripping out his throat with a snarl that was far too mature for her age.

The city lights flickered outside the penthouse as Sophie, Alex, and James huddled around the dining table, the journal laid open before them. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation and fear. They knew that within these pages lay the answers to a mystery that had haunted Sophie for years. The journal was the key to unlocking the secrets behind their parents' deaths and exposing the shadowy network that threatened their lives. Sophie’s fingers trembled as she turned the first few pages. Her mother’s neat handwriting filled the yellowed sheets, notes and dates scribbled in the margins. She read aloud, her voice quivering.

From within the darkness... footsteps echoed. Slow. Heavy. Certain. The gray-coated man instinctively stepped backward. "I know those footsteps." The First Reader closed his eyes. "So do I." The footsteps stopped just beyond the doorway. A calm voice emerged from the shadows. "Adrian..." "You've been searching for me..." "...for much longer than you remember."
