Mercy saved us from that mean dog.” William glanced down at Mercedes who remained sitting on the floor, her smile relaxed and her eyes twinkled like emerald jewels. “What is James talking about?” he asked her. “While we were in town this afternoon a dog broke away from his owner and charged us, giving the children a terrible fright. I couldn’t think of any way to keep him from attacking us, so I picked up a rock and hit him in the head.” Another jolt of surprise pierced through William’s body. “And Papa,” James continued, “it was so wonderful, ‘cause the doggie yelped and ran home with his tail ‘tween his legs.” He laughed. “You should’ve saw’d him, Papa.”

POV Eric Waking up in a haze trying to understand what Braxton is talking about. “What, found who?” “Quite you’ll scare her.” Braxton whispered. My eyes focusing I can’t believe what I’m seeing. Standing ten feet away is a tiny pup, matted fur with chunks of mud hanging off. Absolute skin and bones, little hips and ribs sticking out. Every vertebrae visible. The worst part is the smell. Rancid smell of decaying flesh and death. If not for the powder blue eyes shining in the moonlight darting around looking for a way to escape, I would have thought we found a dead animal.

Everything she'd read so far in the book came rushing back to her on a tidal wave of excitement. She sat perfectly still, watching from the corner of her eye as a large animal moved softly into her peripheral range. She turned her head slightly and her eyes widened. A huge black-pelted animal moved casually until it was on the porch right next to her. About the size of a Great Pyrenees dog, it could have been one of the drawings in the book come to life.

The six ferocious wolves were still hot on her trail, their growls and snarls piercing through the stillness of the woods. One more dash and Anna tried some self-incitation as she slowly tried to pick up her momentum. But all of a sudden, she was stopped in her tracks as realization hit her when she noticed she wasn't running on a track anymore. Anna's heart raced as she looked down to see her feet submerged in a murky mud pool. The thick mud seemed to suck at her feet like quicksand, threatening to swallow her up. She couldn't feel any solid ground under her feet. Mud pool... that explained why the environment around her seemed arid.

He laughed to himself. There was a slight breeze in the meadow. She looked down and saw his chocolate colored fur. She snuggled into him but something was different. She looked and saw the auburn fur on her paws. She was a wolf! She closed her eyes and relaxed. She was where she belonged, and all was right with the world, for the moment.

You complain when there’s mud in your feet-pads. ‘Excuse me, mud ruins the aesthetic. Keep your priorities straight.’ Suddenly, the ground dipped. It wasn't a gentle slope, it was a rain-slicked mudslide. Era’s front paw scraped against a wet stone, skidded, and for a terrifying heartbeat, the world tilted. We tumbled, a mess of fur and limbs, toward a dark ravine. But Era was a hybrid for a reason, she twisted mid-air, her claws digging into the loam, and propelled us forward with a grace I could only envy from the passenger seat of her mind.

Dante asks as we follow at a distance. This time, I keep my pace with Dante's so that I keep my distance from Chelsea's group. She is really running quickly with all of her group with her. Soon though, one of the pups with bright red paws begins to outdistance all of the others. Chelsea tosses the book to that pup as the rest follow as quickly as they can. "I guess that the theory about where the red is located on their bodies just might be accurate." Dante says with a snort.

|| Lilac’s POV || Fire raced through my veins as my bones snapped and reformed, muscles twisting beneath skin that prickled with the emergence of thick fur. A scream tore from my throat— or tried to— but it came out as a roar, deep and thunderous, shaking the very earth beneath my paws. Paws. I looked down. Massive, golden furred paws dug into the dirt, claws like curved daggers glinting in the moonlight. My breath came in hot, ragged pants, each exhale sending plumes of mist into the cold night air.
