Elara tried to brace her heels against the ribbed iron wall of the chimney, but her feet were part of the eighth leaf now, her boots flattened into two square, three-inch lead tabs that were keyed to the sorting machine's guide-rails. With one quick movement, I directed the ball of light straight at Rosabella, hitting her squarely in the chest. The energy exploded on impact, filling the air with a bright flash of light before engulfing her. She let out a piercing scream, a cry of pain and suffering as the light ate at her, burning her till there was nothing left.
