Chapter 14: A New Lead Eltan Storm "I feel so bad, Faith. I kind of feel like it's my fault. Especially since it happened the day after I turned him down. Maybe I was too harsh on him?" "No, Candy. It wasn't your fault. It was just an accident, not a suicide." I listened to the conversation between Candy and Faith while leisurely sipping my drink at the bar counter. Today was Faith's first day back at work after her week off, and Candy was expressing her sorrows to Faith.

But I cannot stop–I must not. I fight still, running forward to meet the farther maniacs with sadness washing over me. I promised to save them but now, with my hands, they were falling. I made a decision and now they’re all… they’re all…” Kai dropped to his knees in front of me, placing his hands firmly on my shoulders. “Stop.” “But I failed—” “You didn’t kill them,” he said, eyes blazing. “Someone else did. Whoever took them, whoever planned this—they’re the ones at fault. Not you.”

The antiseptic smell clings to my clothes, my hair, my skin—a reminder of where we are and why we're here and whose fault it is. The bench outside is freezing metal against my legs, but I barely feel it. All I can see is Gray's bloodied face from that photo burned into my mind, those words painted on the wall in what looked like blood: IT'S YOUR FAULT, SARAH. Because it is. Julian yelled and Faith winced. "Come on, Rain. Open the door." Nothing. I hesitated, then let out a sigh, laying my hand against the wood once more. "I'm sorry." The silence between us drew out. "I know you're blaming yourself," I went on. "I know exactly what's running through your head right now. That if you had done something different, Faith would be safe. That it's your fault Nathan took her. That it's your fault anyone is in danger." Another pause. Then, barely above a whisper, "It is my fault."
