He snuggled closer, rubbing his nose gently against hers, his grip tightening as if afraid she might disappear.
“Dog… barks too much,” he murmured sweetly.
“Pretty lady, chase.”
His face buried itself in the curve of Ember’s neck.
The room went dead silent.
So silent that if a pin fell, its sound would echo like thunder.
Did the Alpha just call Linda a dog?
Ember froze.
She pushed him away at arm’s length, her eyes wide as she searched his face, desperately looking for any hint of deception, mockery, or sanity.
