I had no idea what that was supposed to mean, and before I could even think of processing it, Xander was gone; the space where his body had been close, nearly pressing against mine, was now empty.
Startled, I spun around, searching him out, only to see him near the church, beside the bushes. Without even thinking, I started moving towards him, but he turned to me before I was even halfway there – he held up a man, struggling in his grip. He stared at me, those eyes of his glowing violet, and he hissed, “You need to understand something now: I am not a hero.”
And then he quickly jerked the man to his chest and sunk his fangs deep into his neck.
