She gets to what looks like the smallest book in the session and she hears a whisper. As she brings her finger back to the book she hears, “Yes!” She grabs it and she opens it. It's so small she reads it within a few hours. She goes at it in awe. She retreads it and is still shocked and blown away by how much valuable information this tiny book contains. She's about to put it away when she hears, “Memorize it!” Jolene repeats, “Memorize?” The voice repeats, “Learn it, live it, love it!”

She gave him a reassuring smile. Cupping Lizzy’s chin in her hands she lifted the little girl’s face and met her teary eyes. “Are you all right?” Lizzy nodded, then swallowed. She cleared her throat and opened her mouth to speak, but snapped it closed. Excitement pounded in Mercedes’ heart. Lizzy again struggled for words and Mercedes waited. With the back of her hand, Lizzy wiped her wet eyes. She looked back at Mercedes. “Tank you,” she mumbled in a barely audible voice.

She used to write about kindness in the journal she carried everywhere. Whenever life became overwhelming, I'd open one of those pages and remind myself that good people still existed. Standing here now... I was beginning to believe it again. "Aya?" Jamey's sleepy voice floated through the hallway. "In here!" A few seconds later, my younger brother wandered inside without looking where he was going, his nose buried inside a thick book. "Pancakes," he muttered automatically. Then his foot slammed into one of the stools. "Ouch." He looked up.

She got up and gave me a hug. "It's all over. Live for yourself from now on." It was something so simple, even an outsider understood. And yet, it had taken me six whole years to finally wake up. Fortunately, it still wasn't too late.

The laptop screen went black at once. I abruptly leaped up from my chair as my heart pounded in my chest. I would never forget the sound of the circuit breaker being pulled. It was this exact crisp sound in my past life that ruined the million-dollar salary offer I'd worked so hard for 26 years of my life. I pushed the room door open and ran into the living room. In the pitch darkness, I saw Mom standing in front of the electrical box, illuminated by the streetlamp outside the window, a smug smile plastered on her face. She was even doing some calculations with her fingers.

I'm hoping Lionel didn't notice. Removing my stuff from my bag I placed a picture of my parents and me on the small table next to me, turning it to the ideal angle. Then I take out some of the few books I own and place them on a shelf on the opposite side of the room. You could say I'm sort of a bookworm.... You are, of course, accurate. It's the only way I can get away from the life I'm presently living, to go to a new place and start a new life. A new beginning. Live a different life. I wish.

I flipped open the lid of the book and didn't know what the fuck. "What's this?" It looked like a photo album filled with girls, young girls. I started to relax a little, thinking that the shit had to do with my cause, which was rescuing young kids from fucked up situations and the twisted adults that were supposed to care for them, and nothing at all to do with my babygirl, until I saw her face looking back at me.

She pushed the door of her bedroom widely opened, before she walked in. Dark blue, her favorite color, her room reeked of the colour, the light bed that stretched from the other end of the room down to the other side. Her night gown wavered across her body as she dragged herself down to her bed. She bent a little, before she brought out a rumpled book from underneath her bed. It read, 'Get a life.' She chortled to herself. Fifteen year old Mira had drafted this, all in the name of living a worthy life, but how had she ended up for her?
