The regret in his eyes was so thick I could almost taste it, a bitter, metallic flavor on the back of my tongue.
"You're... you're with him," he stammered. "My father. You'd really choose him over us? Over our destiny?"
"Our destiny died in the den, Kael," I said. I stepped back, the shadows pooling at my feet, swallowing the moonlight. "And as for your father, he doesn't just want my body. He wants my strength. He wants the monster you were too afraid to look at."
I turned away from him, my heart pounding a steady, rhythmic beat of victory. The ghostly bond was still there, pulling at my wrist, but I didn't care. I would drag that tether behind me like a chain until it finally snapped.
