"Oi! You! What are you doing in my spot?"
A homeless man, wrapped in layers of damp newspaper and plastic, crawled out from beneath a piece of plywood. He looked at Sari with suspicion, then his eyes drifted to the bundle in her jacket.
"Is that a kid?" he asked, his voice gravelly.
"She’s... she’s my daughter," Sari said, backing away.
"You shouldn't be here, Lady. The 'Black Jackets' come through here at 2:00 AM to clear the alleys. They don't care if you've got a kid or not. They’ll throw you in the back of a truck and you won't come back."
