We move without speaking. The ground is flatter here, the brush is lower, the air thinner in a way that makes sound carry farther than it should. Nyxara walks a few steps ahead of me. She keeps a steady pace that doesn’t ask questions. Every so often she adjusts the strap at her shoulder or shifts her grip on her blade, small corrections that suggest habit more than nerves.

Cara laughed at the idea of her friend's lack of originality before turning and and walking back down the street. Walking alone without the distraction of the calico, Cara took more notice of the neighborhood. Other than some birds chirping it was eerily silent. S he hadn't seen a single car on the road. The neighborhood roads weren't usually overly busy. But there were several families that lived here. So it was unusual to not see at least a single vehicle driving through. There were no radios playing, no children laughing or playing,, nothing. Cara wondered where everyone was. She should have seen at least some signs of the people who lived here as she walked along.

I mumbled. “Go,” he said again, motioning toward the mansion. I hesitated just a second longer, then turned around and started walking back. My boots hit the ground softly, the sound almost too loud in the dead silence around me. The streets were empty now. Like… completely empty. Not a single soul was outside. No windows cracked open, no whispers or movements. Everyone had taken shelter. Everyone had listened. Except me. And Leo. And a few stubborn betas scattered around the perimeter probably gritting their teeth and trying not to pass out.

My sense of smell, my eyes seeing in the dark, and my sense of being around me if there is a presence close to me.

But as the hours pass, something starts to feel off. Nobody knocks. There’s no noise outside. No footsteps in the hallway. No voices, no doors opening or closing. No cars pulling in. No engines leaving. Nothing.

I walked to my car, every step too loud in my own ears.
