He carried Lydia away, leaving me standing alone by the fence. I watched them go, a searing pain tearing through my chest. But I turned and walked toward the woods at the edge of town. I had something important to do. I knew exactly who I’d find there. There was Sebastian Whitmore lying there. The high-ranking military officer who’d taken a liking to the young war hero and mentored him, opening every door for Julian. In my last life, he'd helped Julian rise through the ranks, reaching a senior position at a remarkably young age.

There was a kind of respect in the way he let the question dangle. My father nodded once, a crisp downward dip of the chin. “For now.” Another pause, its duration just long enough to reestablish the hierarchy. Then he leaned back slightly, a posture less of relaxation than of disengagement. “There is a difference,” he continued, “between a war that begins by accident….” His gaze found Alexander again. “…and one that begins by design.” The implication hung between us. Someone wanted this war. It was no longer just a matter of pride or territory or even Gabriel; it was a matter of design, and my father intended to be its architect, not its victim.

Lila could not believe that the monsters she was expecting turned out to be really sweet people. With the way his mom welcomed her from the door, one would never believe that there was truly a war going on between both families. It made her wonder if it was only her family that was keeping up the war or if the Beaumont family was just a bunch of really good actors. She was leaning towards the latter because there was no way they were going to be really sweet towards her that way.

I rolled my eyes at him, and he chuckled. We sat up and realized that we had been locked in by the library keepers. They probably didn't know that we were inside. “Don't worry, I know too many ways out of this place.” Zion said, and I felt at rest. The books were mostly boring, but they were also enlightening. “So, there's this war that happened that caused the demons to be banished.” I said, and he raised his head to look at me. “The Battle of Wolmon.” Zion said, and I nodded. His eyes widened when he realized what I was driving at.
