Around noon, the door finally creaked open just like it always did. I tensed a bit, ready to snap but it wasn’t the usual maid this time. This one was new, carrying a sharp, wooden scent I couldn’t recognize. “Who are you?” I got up and moved to a corner of the room, creating some fair distance between us. But the maid just dropped a tray of stew and bread on the bedside table and bolted without even saying a word. I frowned and quickly steps towards the tray to pick up the bowl. I could clearly sense something was definitely off.

I changed the topic because they seemed unresponsive to my previous statement. “She is Elena, the head of the maidservants.” The young girl pointed at the older woman near me. “This is my sister, Cassandra, and I am Novelli. I will be your personal servant once you marry Prince Caius.” She said excitedly. The two women beside her gave her a sharp stare. I smiled. “Novelli. Such a classy name you have.” I commented. “Thank you!” She squealed, and her smile showed her ivory teeth. “I’ll fix your hair, Milady. That’s my expertise!” Her sister pinched her arm and whispered, “You seem more excited for the ball.” Novelli pouted and stared on the floor.

Every human maid that was brought in the castle was already serving the white family before she was brought over to serve the only young master of the White family. Taking the name of the young master was not allowed to anyone except Housekeeper Alvin. Even he would only do it when necessary. The owner of the Mansion was someone who liked things neat and clean and hated messy environments. Apart from Mary, there were five other maids who were staying in the mansion and helping Housekeeper Alvin to take care of it.

“Fancy name is it. Your parents think they're lords or sumtin'. Giving a scrappy girl like you a name like that. You'll go by Mari here. Better not to draw too much attention to yourself,” Neema finished with a satisfied grunt. I smiled a bit, the girl I was supposed to be, did have a lord for a father. I guess Mari is a more practical name for a maid. We entered the palace via the kitchen back entrance just as I had suspected. Several maids were already working in the kitchen when we entered. I had never been to the kitchen back home but I supposed this is what it would have looked like.

He wore power like other men wore cologne naturally, effortlessly, with an edge of danger that probably made smart women run the other direction. Aria had never been particularly smart when it came to self-preservation. "You're about to hire a very dedicated new maid," she said to his image. "One with enough skills to rob you blind if she wanted to. But don't worry, I only want one thing. One plant. And then I'll disappear like I was never there." She didn't let herself think about the ethics of it. Didn't let herself worry about what would happen if she was caught. This was about survival her mother's survival and Aria would do whatever it took.
