She turned to her right to see a nurse standing next to her, surprised. Snapping out of her daze, she looked around. Everyone was giving her curious looks.

"I told you. My name is Thalia Ashcroft" "This Thalia Ashcroft or another one?" The nurse asked holding a phone close to her face. Her photo filled the screen but before she could answer, the woman added "Because this woman is dead. Her funeral was a week ago" "Nurse Salinas!" The doctor chastised. "What? I believe the truth will jog her memory"

Without thinking, I walked outside, wanting to blend into the vast, frozen world around me. The weight on my shoulders grew heavier, my breathing became more labored, and my limbs began to lose sensation. I walked on numbly. The vast world around me offered no place of belonging. In the haze of my consciousness, a dark figure suddenly appeared in front of me. The person was panting as he reached out a pair of trembling arms to catch me before I fell. Though my body was weak, I still had some weight to me. In the icy cold, the frail arms struggled to carry me. Then, I heard a familiar murmuring in my ears, saying, "You can't die… You can't die…"

With a smile so big it made me laugh without trying. Gone. Used. Harvested. My throat closed. My eyes stung. “You okay?” Ghost asked, gruff but quiet. I shook my head. I wasn’t. I felt like I was falling through the floor. Through time. Through everything. I pressed my palms to my eyes, hot tears pouring through. I tried to breathe, but all I heard was the nurse’s voice on repeat: They took it. A footstep behind me. I wiped my face and turned.

"You guys were taking too long, and I heard a—" I never finished the sentence. High above us, on the rusted catwalk of the neighboring warehouse, a flash of moonlight hit glass. A sniper scope. "Gio! Look out!" I screamed, lunging toward him. It was a clumsy move. I wasn't a soldier; I was a nurse. I tripped over a stray coil of rope, my legs tangling. Instead of a heroic tackle, I went sprawling onto the open concrete, right into the center of the kill zone.
