A small white card. I unpinned it with numb fingers and read the words written in sharp, clean handwriting. "Wear this tomorrow. —T"

he admitted, his eyes meeting Yam’s with a gratitude that words could not capture. Yam smiled, a soft, knowing smile that spoke of shared understanding and unspoken promises. “I didn’t know I could write it,” he replied, his voice tinged with a hint of wonder. Franc tucked the letter into their shared archive beneath a heading that read: “Proof of Softness, Signed.” It was a place where moments of vulnerability and connection were preserved, a testament to the beauty of their journey together.

(Clarice) There are eleven letters in front of me. I have laid them out in two neat rows on the kitchen table. The way I used to lay out invitations when I planned dinners for two hundred. Five on the left. Six on the right. Each one stopped at a different sentence. Letter one. Dear Natasha. I am writing to say what I should have said a long time — Letter two. Dear Natasha. There are a number of things I think you should hear from me rather than —

I opened the desk drawer and pulled out a fresh sheet of stationery, plain, unheaded, with nothing official written anywhere on it. Unscrewed my pen. Looked once more at the charts across the bench—three panels, one shared signature, one small circled phrase that might mean everything or nothing at all. Then I began to write. Not a case file. Not a research summary. A letter. The first line settled onto the page in my own steady hand, and whatever it said, it was already true before I'd finished forming the second.

"To a year?" "To anything. To love. To family. To happiness." "But we did." "But we did." "Because of you." "Because of us." --- A letter arrived at midnight. No return address. No name. Just a single line on a single page. "This isn't over." I stared at the words. Kael read over my shoulder. "Voss?" "The handwriting is different. Smaller. More precise." "Then who?" "I don't know." --- We sat in silence.

"You have a point." Without uttering a reply to him, I opened the other letter that appeared to be addressed to me and raised a brow. Then what's the third letter? I pulled the last one out, smaller than the other two, and frowned at the numbers written inside it. 312 . . . I see. I stashed it back in and opened the letter for me. 𝓣𝓸 𝓶𝔂 𝓫𝓮𝓵𝓸𝓿𝓮𝓭 𝓭𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽𝓮𝓻,

It was written: "Hello, John! I know that you will receive this letter on 15 may 15 2018 year and you open the envelope of the letter at 16 hours 45 minutes. Do not be surprised how I know when you open the envelope of this letter …» At that moment, John was looking with a frightened look at the current hour and minute on his phone, discovering the exact time written in the letter to when he opened this envelope of the letter. Then he continued to read the letter:

; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} I heard the door opened.

’ I ask, tone softer this time. Canus finally opens the box. His movements are stiff, and he freezes when he sees the letters within. After a long, tense silence, he pulls at the legs of the tidy bow tie knotting the ribbon, then lifts the first letter up from the stack. It’s the most recent one, unmarked and covered in the scents of two people who—if I’m right—no longer exist. He turns it over, flips open the flap, and peeks at the letter within. His eyes shut, a curtain of dark grey lashes fluttering against his cheeks.

I pull them out and set the box aside. “H-how do I do this?” I fan the stack. “Start with the oldest?” “There’s no wrong way to follow your heart.” Justice’s quiet energy helps me relax. I open the letter on the bottom. The first one. It’s a handwritten note on half a piece of notebook paper. Milo’s small neat writing only fills a few lines. Dear Leni,
