A Vow Of Reluctance
I ask, hoping my voice doesn’t betray how much I’ve missed him.
He glances at me, surprised to find me waiting. “Always,” he says quietly.
I hesitate, then take a chance. “You could sit for a while. Relax.”
“I don’t relax,” he replies, but his voice is softer than before.
I lean against the counter, watching him carefully. “Maybe you should try it sometime.”
For a second, just a second something shifts in his expression. A crack in the mask. But before I can grasp it, the distance is back, cold and unyielding.
