Let me get each of your names, and I will mind link each of you when I can find a good time to get all of us together. I also want your favorite color. We will start with something very easy like a dishcloth. It’s something simple and something that can be done quickly. Okay?” They all agreed. Luke and I laughed and started eating. When we were done eating, I started crocheting again as Rachel watched. I finished the blanket I was making and tied it off. Rachel sighed, “I would love to learn how to do that.” I suggested, “I can teach you.” She asked, “Would you?” I smiled, “I can definitely do that. All you need to do is pick a pattern. When you get the pattern, it starts with a material list. Just get everything on the list.” I explained the list to her and showed her examples of everything I was talking about. Rachel hugged me, “You have no idea how much this means to me!” I laughed, “I would love to have a workout buddy who can double as a crochet buddy while I can’t work out.”

SARAH The rhythmic motion of my hands moving the crochet hook through the yarn was oddly soothing. It was one of the few things that could keep my mind calm these days. I sat on the living room couch, determined to finish the little blanket I’d started weeks ago. The soft, repetitive motion allowed me to focus on something other than the chaos that had become my life.

The tall windows that made up the entire wall of the room were opened to let in the night breeze while ornamental light bulbs hung from the ceiling and rustic wall lamps provided ample light. “I love your table cloth patterns, Auntie!” said Nestie, admiring the intricate crochet work. “I like these flower and pineapple patterns. I don’t think they do a lot of these anymore.” He lifted the edge of the table cloth to look at it more closely. “I had this done by the women of the Aler Foundation. They are quite skilled with their hands. I just thought this old house deserves to have more handicrafts to give it that antique atmosphere,” replied Susan.

I was hoping it would be a surprise because I had never mentioned I could do it. She gasped. She spread it out on her bed and ran her hands over it. I had made it with large, thick heavy yarn. It wasn’t really crocheting it was more like hand tying. But it wasn’t easy. Still… it was worth it. I had chosen white and gray for the colors to match Jenny’s white and gray striped bedding. “Collins … did you make this??” She asked me. I grinned. “I can’t believe you did this. It must’ve taken ages when did you even have the time?” She asked me.

There was a small more attached which only said come up with something creative. Fuck! It had been so long since I last knitted. I knew how to do it, but I had not crocheted in about a year. I learnt it from my mother when I was growing up. She used to crochet and knit a lot when I was growing up, then she would sell the shawls or socks to our neighbors. That was a very effective way of making money until my father asked her to stop. That was over a year ago and since then, I have not laid my hands on the knitting pins.
