I hold onto the handle for dear life as the monster thrashes. I twist the blade. Green slime sprays out. I dodge to the side, avoiding the corrosive splash. Below me, I can feel the axe handle melting from the acid.

Then, from outside: "You're awake?" I went tense. He was standing on the other side of the door, and he didn't come in. "Do you want me to come in?" I gripped the blanket. After a long moment I said, my voice scraped and rough. "I dreamed about the coffin again." The corridor was silent for a moment. Then, very quietly. "Was it the same as that night?" "Yes." I paused. "My mother's Turning failed. She died in one. So I'm afraid of the dark, afraid of small closed spaces."

“You know, I think we make a pretty good team.” I glanced at the corpses littering my yard, then at her. Even with the bruises, dirt, and blood all over her face, it never hid her beauty. “For tonight.” I emphasized. “Once the sun’s out, we’ll be back as each other’s target.” Monsters?
