Not waiting to behold the fallout, I scramble out of the dining room, fleeing back to the nursery. Once back in the room, I ignite a taper from the room's only wall sconce. CHAPTER ELEVEN – FIRE AND LIES The fire spread faster than I thought possible. Flames licked the ridge like angry fingers, cracking the earth beneath our boots. The air was thick, choking, each breath burning my lungs. Luca clung to me, eyes wide with terror, and I felt a pulse of raw fear that made my hands shake—but I forced it down. I watched in despair as the room that once served as my sanctuary became a raging inferno after I set it ablaze, with flames consuming the ceiling, floor, and even the air I breathed. I stood at the center of this blazing disaster with my heart hammering against my ribcage while the intense heat from the flames touched my skin.
