THE SUBSTITUTE MATE FOR THE ALPHA KING
The only sound was the faint, haunting hum of the lure and the thrum of Kairi’s waiting wards.
It happened without warning.
There was no displacement of air, no shimmer of light. One moment, the space before the lure was empty. The next, the assassin was there. Identical to the first: matte-black, light-eating armor, featureless helm, and in its hand, the shard of void-blade.
It didn’t hesitate. It lunged at the shimmering doppelgänger, the blade thrusting forward to erase the phantom heart.
“Now, Sze!” Kairi’s command was a whip-crack in my mind.
