Our footsteps echoed like drums in the darkness.
And at the far end, beneath a natural skylight filtering a beam of light through some crack in the surface, stood the altar.
Damn the Moon Goddess.
It was impressive. Not because of its size — which was modest compared to what I had expected. But because of its presence. A square platform of black stone, polished like a mirror, upon which stood a statue of the Moon Goddess about a meter tall. The Goddess was depicted with her hands raised upward, as if holding something invisible, her carved face so detailed it made you feel she was watching you.
