My lungs burned, my legs ached and felt weak, and I could hear footsteps behind me now.
Heavy, and fast.
I spotted a tall building and ran behind it, hoping there might be another exit, or someone, anyone, around.
As I turned the corner, I crashed straight into something solid. A hard chest.
I cried out and stumbled backward, nearly falling.
One of the men stood in front of me.
Up close, he looked even scarier. Cold.
I backed away slowly, my hands raised without thinking.
“Please,” I whispered. “I don’t want any trouble, please.”
