To believe that there was hope of him making out alive. "I know kiddo" He wrapped his hands around me. My dad. My hero. Now I needed to be his hero and return him all the good he had done for me in the past. All his sleepless nights holding me when I had nightmares after mom's funeral. All this hours spent on cooking classes so he could bake me my favorite cookies and make me his perfect pasta. I sighed, before pulling away. He stroke a part of my hair that had fallen out of place and cupped my cheek, planting a soft kiss on my forehead. "I love you Dad"

I paused, smiling sheepishly even though he couldn't see me, "Well, I just wanted to talk to someone..." "I've been through hell with you always pestering me. Do I have a choice?" I could picture him shaking his head, I couldn't argue with him now. "It's my father's death anniversary..." I trailed off, hiccupping. The other line was silent, so I continued. "I really miss him..." I chuckled bitterly. "He was a good man. A loving and sweet father. I look up to him. when I was a kid I saw him as a hero."

I weeped staring right in his eyes which I could see was also filled with such pain for what I was going through, where his hands were soon on either side of my face again. “I know baby, but you should see what your father did as a heroic act of selflessness, he stepped forward and sacrificed himself to save all of us. What he did will be remembered for generations to come where everyone will see him as the hero he was.” He said attempting to make me see the positives, but in that moment, I realised there was someone else going through this.

I forced myself to focus on what my father was saying as he pointed at me and I stepped forward. He looked at his watch and a huge smile formed on his handsome face. My dad was always such a handsome man. When I was little, I asked him if he could find me a mate that was just like him. My father was kind and loving, but strong and very protective. He was my hero. I wanted a mate that was just like him.

"A hero? But Jefferson, you are a hero." I stared at him, a frown on my tiny face. "What are you talking about Dad? I'm not a hero. I stared at the floor. "I'm just a five year old that speaks good grammar. That's not even a superpower." "Jefferson, you've been a hero since the day you were born. Albeit a shy one, but a hero nonetheless. If you weren't, would I have shown you your great grandfather's house? " I cocked my head to the side.

Mr Lee smiled, "so, I see you drew your father in this portrait" little Jude nodded with a smile, "of course grandpa, first you are my hero, then daddy. You two are the best hero's ever" "and why do you call us your hero's?" Mr Lee lovingly asked his grandson. "well, because everyone is scared of grandpa and grandpa gives orders and everyone listens to what grandpa says... I want to be like you when I grow up...and oh, daddy is also my hero cause he protects mummy. I want to be just like daddy too, so I can protect mummy"

My father and countless others walked in the darkness so the rest of us could stand in that light. He was my hero. From that moment on, I wanted to be like him. In the distance, the city lights began to shine, peaceful and calm. My journey had only begun.

Her father's voice broke and as he goes sentimental. "Dad..." She couldn't help to utter as tears started to form in her eyes. "Do you remember when you read a poem to me about being a wonder kid way back when you're nine, Sunshine?" She smiled remembering that memory when she was a little kid. How could she forget that? Suddenly, Dad and I both heard the door ring, interrupting our conversation. "I'll take it; get dressed; your date might be waiting," Dad jokingly said before landing a kiss on my forehead. I chuckled as I watched Dad leave my room. I wish I could find someone as good as my Dad. Ever since I was a little girl, my dad has always been my superhero. He was the embodiment of everything I admired in a person. Kind, loving, and always there for me, Dad had set the bar high when it came to finding a potential partner. But as I grew older, the harsh reality of the dating world altered my perception.
