“And last, but not least, is Scott Anderson a university student from Boston. Please give our luck contestants a big round of applause.” The applause light came on and the three contestants were all cheered. It was time for Round Two. “I see you’ve all got your pistol’s loaded for our first game,” Kent said with a laugh as the camera panned across the three contestants throbbing erections. “Which is good ‘cause they’re gonna need ‘em!” Bambi added, stepping up beside Kent and running a hand across his chest, inside the lapel of his red jacket. “That’s right Bambi,” agreed Kent. “The first game is going to test your range! For each foot you shoot you’ll get 20 points. Our record is 8 feet 5 i

Close-cropped grey hair, flat voice, emotional availability of a padlock. "You here for sport? Defense? License requirements?" "Competence." His eyes lift. Maya smiles politely. It is a good answer because it sounds reasonable and explains nothing. "We can work with competence." The first session is safety. Rules. Procedures. Range etiquette. What to touch, what not to touch, when to stop, when to listen, when to keep her finger absolutely nowhere near trouble. Maya listens with the focus of someone being handed instructions for not dying stupidly. When Grant demonstrates proper handling, she watches his hands. Not the gun. The hands. The calm economy of movement. No flourish. No performance

Most activities just require a willing mind and hands to run. My own personal specialization is riflery, even though as a counselor, I don't actually get to shoot much more than demonstrations. But I'm a really good shot, and I admit to being a show-off. The actual instruction and range safety is handled by a senior staff member named Craig, an Army vet who has about every certification in safety and instruction either the military or the NRA can give. He is fifty-something and looks like he takes a ten mile hike each morning before breakfast. He is a good teacher, hyper safety conscious, and pretty funny when he wants to be... which is seldom.

I nod, still trying to push past the rising panic in my chest. He rakes his finger through his fluffy long brunette hair, pushing it aside, then turns to me. “For a beginner, your stance matters the most.” He positions himself, standing with his feet about shoulder-width apart. His body is squared up, feet planted with a relaxed readiness, shoulders back but firm. He raises the pistol, aligning it with one of the targets at the end of the range. He glances at me, making sure I’m paying attention. “Then your aiming, a hint? Use the sights to line up your target.”

The soundproofed room was empty that morning when Colton opened the door, and then waited until the redhead entered. Deep down, the militarized man didn't like what he was doing. Teaching Blair to be an agent, when she hadn't even mentioned that she enjoyed the profession, seemed wrong. - "Today is your lucky day. Let's practice some shooting" he commented. Target shooting was an activity that involved testing proficiency and accuracy, prediction and speed. It did not matter whether the shot was short or long range. - "Where do we start?" The redhead asked. There was a marking on the floor of the room indicating where people should stand, aim at the target and shoot. The distance between the

The compound was always protected. We got to the range and unloaded our gear. We split off into six teams of ten, with Jax, Noah, Oliver, Nathan, John, and me as team leaders since we were the most proficient with our weapons and training. Although after the accident, I had doubted my own skills for a while. But Jax never let me give up. He pushed me to get back out on the range and pushed me to be even better.

Ben set up a small shooting range using smaller wood chips and drew a line on the ground about fifty steps away. “Try shooting the wood chips from this distance. We will slowly increase the distance to find your ideal range.” Fifty steps was quite the distance. They were no longer in the woodcutting area. Zen did not know if getting any further was wise but stood behind Sasha with Ben to observe. The wind blew gently, but Sasha had no hesitation. Even without a scope, she fired the gun six times in one breath. All three wood chips flew from their spot, and Ben raised his brow. Did she miss her first shots?

Scott seethes, glaring at Jonathon. “Beginner’s luck” Jonathon laughs, giving Simone a smile. “Do you have something to say to me?” “46 points?” Emmett questions Vince in a whisper. “I didn’t think it was fair giving him a perfect score” Vince chuckles as Scott storms away without saying another word to Jonathon. “Truth is, it was harder to hit the bullseye when you aren’t in direct line of the target” he adds going back to the group of kids wanting to have a go at the shooting range.

I extended my arms, aimed the pistol, and fired at the shooting target. “So shooting range is your way of recuperating? You’re a little rusty.” Beck was right. It had been a while since I held and fired a gun. It was not that I needed to carry every day. That was why I hired Beck and Linden. Compared to them, it was a part of their job to maintain active. “I know.” I slid another magazine. “I hope you are not thinking of her father or Jasper while you are targeting the paper.” I fixed the goggle up and glared at him. “I might as well include you if you keep pissing me off.”
