Chapter 122 Adam's POV The phone call I received was from an unknown person who claimed to have dirt on Kelvin. The voice was unmistakably that of a lady’s—soft yet oddly calm—but after three minutes of listening to her speak in vague circles, it became clear to me that it was nothing more than a prank call. There was no information, no real name, and definitely no proof, just hollow threats laced with cryptic language. I hung up immediately, irritated and confused, wondering what kind of sick person would find joy in toying with others like that. Why would someone go out of their way to play such a prank, especially during a night like this?

I answered. "You've been given another opportunity to audition and you can come in this morning. We'll see you later," The caller said. My jaw dropped in disbelief. I was surprised. "Really? This is not a prank call, is it?" I asked with excitement. "It's real and this isn't a prank call. See you later. Bye." The caller replied and the call ended. I screamed excitedly. I stood up from the bed and danced happily. I quickly got into the bathroom and started to get ready.

Everyone said we were a perfect match, like a blade and its sheath. We had exchanged rings. The wedding was set for early spring the following year. Everything should have gone smoothly. Yet, staring at the bright “Cancel” button on the screen, I suddenly remembered his words. “A prank.” An overwhelming sense of exhaustion crawled up from my bones. I suddenly felt tired.

I walked to the room to change just as my phone rang getting me to pick it up and find an unknown number calling. With a shrug I answered. “Hello.” “Did you have a good night?” the voice said as I immediately got scared. Whoever it was had used a voice changer and as such I could not tell if it was a male or a female talking. “Who is this?” I asked with my heart pounding against my chest. “I hope you had a good night. I have been watching you all night and I know everything you’ve been doing.” I refused to believe all these pranks being set by people these days. I had seen it all on YouTube. I was not going to fall for it.

My team was the only one in the company that hit its performance targets this year. At the year-end party, the boss waited until everyone else had left, then he pulled out a big red box and had the four of us in my team draw blind boxes. I drew a desktop tower caked in dust, an antique that looked like it belonged in a museum. Haley Lambert, my teammate, drew a monitor covered edge to edge in scratches. Drew Sandler got a keyboard with every letter worn clean off the keys. Gabe Carell ended up with a grease-slicked wired mouse. Our boss, Cyrus Griffin, clapped me on the shoulder, grinning drunkenly.
