I begin conjuring my magic in preparation for the fight. I look over at our new arrivals and assess them. One of the ghouls has a medium frame with a buzz cut . The other one is probably close to six feet, short brown hair, and has a thick red scar running from his cheek to his chin. They scan the crowd and their eyes land on Kieran. “Just the man we’ve been looking for!” Scarface says as they begin strolling towards us. The patrons standing in their path quickly move before they get trampled.

The last girl, a sophomore with perfectly straightened hair, actually wrinkled her nose when she spoke to me. The prep room was exactly what I'd expected from a place like Nocturne. The entirety of it was polished marble and gleaming mirrors, with clusters of girls touching up their makeup and adjusting their uniforms. The chatter died when I walked in, replaced by the kind of pointed silence that felt heavier than any noise.

He was sure even a whisper would alert the shadow he was looking at in the dark. What it was, he didn’t know. He was sure, though, that it was bent over to a lump, unmoving body of someone. The creature was groaning, but its prey was no longer in the defense. Adjusting to the darkness, it became a challenge not to make a noise when he took in the feature of the monster. It looked just like the ones from the movie he, and others before her, were so fond of binge-watching. “What is happening?” he whispered, tears racing down once again as he slowly moved back.

Richard says wriggling his brows playfully. I am about to reply to him but a deep familiar voice yells from across the room "I am very sure I heard my name."

I’m starting to understand Marcus’s feelings. “I wonder what territory he could be king of,” Sophia muses. “Someplace in or near Tormentia?” Roach sniffs the air and scurries backward on the exam table. “She’s a vampire!” he announces. “Yes,” I reply, putting a hand on Sophia’s shoulder. “I’ve taken her as my mate. She’s a good vampire, I promise.” “There are no good vampires,” Roach says darkly. Dr. Lawrence frowns and starts poking and prodding at Roach, shining a light in his eyes. “What makes you say that?”

I shifted my gaze to the rest of the prisoners. Some guys were laughing, trading jokes. Some lifting. Some watching. But I saw it—the subtle shift—when my gaze circled on Jordan. Again. It started when Roach approached. Roach’s height never matches the troubles he exudes. He's short, so twitchy, always scratching something, always sweating like he owed his pores money. People called him Roach not just because of his hygiene but because like a cockroach, when stomped upon, never completely dies. He might lie on his back and play dead. He bounces back when he feels no one was watching. He’d been jumped, stabbed once, caught with stolen meds—and still came back like a damn zombie.
