I punctuate each word with a sharp poke to the chest. “I don’t know what you are talking about!” he starts to panic. "Yes, I remember you from three weeks ago but what are the odds that some hook-up from Sacramento would also be here in Santa Cruz?" he is starting to hyperventilate as he struggles to explain himself. “I had no idea you’d be my professor when I signed up for classes. How could I, I didn't even know your name?" I can smell the truth in his words. If he were lying, I'd taste it in his fear.

She leaned in, the tone of her voice dipping to an almost whisper. “Genius doesn’t excuse it, Robert. It justifies it. Art demands sacrifice, and the world remembers the brave—not the moral.” The tension crackled in the air between them. Darren breathed out hard, and we could see his character trying to wrestle with the ethical implications of her words. It has something to do with you being approved into this school early on. The request was made by the associate professor. You don’t know how lucky you are, girl.” Wait. I thought my early acceptance was weird. But who the hell is this associate professor? “The professor, who is it?” I ask. “You don’t know?” Tory’s voice takes a higher pitch again. Gods, it’s screeching. “He’s a popular scholar in Rockland. Professor Adrian Cole. I thought you knew him.” My fingers still. Everywhere grows quiet. The world pauses again for the f

“Now this semester might actually be worth attending.” I barely heard her. Something about him felt familiar. Not just the voice. The way he carried himself. The way he stood. Even the angle of his jaw tugged at something in the back of my mind. It was ridiculous. I was certain I had never met Professor Jackson before in my life. If I’d seen a man who looked like that, I would’ve remembered. So maybe it was just one of those strange coincidences. Maybe he simply reminded me of someone. Still, the feeling lingered.

Flipping the pages but without looking at them, he stared at the elderly professor's back. "Spirits are fine partners for the world, Professor. But we can't fully explain their weird abilities with our science as of now, right? And we can't just go and disturb the balance, sir—" Zen heaved out a sigh and turned his head only to look at the young man with a scornful face.

"I feel like there's something off about this Professor Garrick. It's like he's solving academic problems, but also subtly guiding the students' emotions." "It's a bit like PUA, trying to use psychological manipulation on some people." Carl spoke softly, "It does seem that way. Professor Garrick has taught this class many times, so the students should be familiar with him. But just now, when he paused, his eyes glanced at a few specific people." Amelia nodded. "I saw that too, which is why I felt something was wrong." Just as the two were whispering, a male student suddenly stood up. "Because of corruption!"

I don't know if he was deliberately trying to make me an object of mockery but it was genuinely pissing me off. "I assure you" I said, holding his gaze, "I have no difficulty connecting themes. It just doesn't relate to the topic. Sit down please." For a second I thought he would sit but he smiled instead. Small, unhurried, like he had all the time in the world– but I did not. "I'm just concerned," he said pleasantly, "that if we can't examine literature from multiple angles we might be limiting our understanding. Don't you think so Professor?"
