One by one, the girls mounted the steps. Some swayed dangerously; others clenched their jaws and pushed forward. When Promise’s turn came, the box felt heavier than its size suggested. Her shoes wobbled on the marble edge of the stair. Each step carved fire into her calves, the strap biting into her ankle. She focused on her breath, one step at a time. Ajegunle stitched my spine, she reminded herself. At the midpoint, her balance faltered, the box tilting. Gasps rose from below. Promise pulled her shoulders back, steadying the weight until she reached the landing. Sweat soaked her back, but the box never fell.
