All I had to do was pass it to him for an easy shot. Instead, I sent the puck flying at him with every ounce of strength I had, aiming directly for his head. It was a pass that could shatter a human skull. A pass that no normal person could possibly react to in time. Time seemed to slow down. I saw Lucien's head snap toward the incoming puck. Saw his eyes widen slightly, the first real emotion I'd seen from him all practice. Saw his hand move faster than physics should allow, catching the puck mid-air like it was moving in slow motion.

Before I could make my way through the door, my jaw tightens with determination, and I turn back to look at them. “Hey, Marlon!” I yell. He is taken aback, and turns around to answer. I gather enough strength in my arm and aim the puck in my hand at his face. I don't think I have ever put more strength into a throw. Being the idiot that he is, Marlon doesn't shift, instead he takes the puck right to his left eye and falls to the ground. I could have sworn that I heard something crack…

Just me and the puck and the ice and the thing in my chest that needed to go somewhere. First defender committed. I shifted left, went right. The same move, but faster now. Fueled by something that tasted like metal and felt like drowning. Second defender tried to angle me off. I dropped the puck between my legs, picked it up on the backhand. Third defender – Porter himself. The captain who’d been grinning all night. I looked at his eyes and saw Caleb. Saw my father. Saw every person who’d ever stood between me and the thing I wanted and smiled while they did it. I faked the shot. He dropped. I went around him so close I could hear his breathing.

"For crimes against the High Council and harboring a rogue entity, Alpha Graham of the Blackwood Pack is hereby sentenced to termination." Miranda brought the blade down toward Graham's neck.

Bryson's on the opposing line, and I can see him eyeing me across the ice. "Alright, ladies," Coach shouts. "Let's see some real hockey." The puck drops and everything happens fast. I get possession and start driving toward the goal, but Bryson's coming at me from the side. He's smaller than me, but he hits like a truck. I see him coming. I should brace for impact or pass the puck. Instead, I try to deke around him. Big mistake. Bryson catches me off balance and sends me flying. I hit the ice hard, sliding into the boards while he steals the puck and skates away like nothing happened.

I stand and he shakes my hand and I leave. --- I text Vera from the car. *Paulson is thinking. Garrett is a yes. Come to the rink tonight — there's a side entrance on the east end, I'll leave it unlocked. Nine o'clock.* She replies in under a minute. *Why the rink.* *Because it's not the house and we need to talk without cameras.* A pause. *Richard has cameras?* *Front door, back garden, driveway. No interior. But the garden is covered.*

Five to five. The building shook with noise. Thirty seconds left. Overtime loomed. But I wasn't done. I won the face-off. Pushed forward with everything I had left. Their defense converged, three on me, trying to stop the momentum. I saw Marcus cutting in from the left. Saw the opening. Passed it over. Marcus took the shot but the goalie saved it. The rebound came right to me. I didn't think. Didn't calculate. Just reacted. The puck flew off my stick in a rising shot that caught the top corner.

His eyes flicked to mine. “Sure.” I whispered. “Are you sure?” “Of course.” I turned to the players. “They're so fast.” One player flicked the puck across the ice. Another caught it. Everything was happening so fast that something slammed violently against the glass inches from my face. I screamed and stumbled backwards. Trevor burst into laughter. I clutched my chest. “Oh my gosh. What the hell was that?” “That's a puck.” “I almost died.” “But it didn't hit you. If it had, I'd beat those guys up.” He smirked.

Zach’s POV There were two cars parked outside Ryder’s off-campus apartment by the time I got there for our next session. One I recognized as the red Cardillac he drives to school, but the second black SUV I had never seen before. Ordinarily I would have dismissed it as a gift, it wouldn’t be beyond his parents to send him a brand-new car for just existing, but the movement from his living room window and raised voices the closer I got told a different story.

I purred, “What’s the difference between a porcupine and a Porche 911 GT3 RS? The porcupine has pricks on the outside.” It took all of two seconds for them to realize I gave them the make and model of Alpha Caius’s stolen car. With a roar that shook the damn walls, he lunged at me. I blinked up at him innocently, all too aware of the razor-sharp claws poised at my throat. “Was it something I said? Are your feelings hurt because I called you a prick?”
