They look like a father with three pups. “Beta Nate.” one of the guards approaches me, while another stays close to the intruders. This was not what I expected when I received a mind link that rogues had been spotted at the border. “Hi, Scott. What do we have here?” I ask, looking at the intruders while petting my dogs’ heads.

He had so much control. Ghost closed his eyes and breathed in. Sloshy, goopy sounds vibrated around him. Cracks and rips broke through the haze that shifted in waves. In the time it would take a human to turn around, a giant black wolf replaced the space Ghost once occupied. He shook out his coat and pranced around me, yipping and making chuffing sounds. “Show off.” My hand instinctively reached up and petted his head, giving his ears a little scratch.

I let my wolf know because the Gray wolf looked like he was tired and barely holding on With a few more hits and growling, Ghost had the gray wolf under his paw, not wasting time he bit down hard and deep on the wolf's neck before ripping his throat off. Pulling off him, Ghost gave me control standing there. We watched as the gray wolf took his last breath.

The pups scattered here and there—a few showing signs of needing sleep soon. His mood got better, if not his leg. But he could hobble to a chair and settle. Looking truly closely at the new pups, he realized that many could not be much older than fifteen. They needed to party before everyone got down to business. They all had that look of too much work and worry. The pups needed to be freed from that and allowed to live as young pups. “It never fails to amaze me how your mother finds the time to find and learn so many words to use at just the perfect moment.”

Polly answered. "Your wolves? Trisha, did you get your wolf?" Bianca asked. Polly had gotten hers when she turned five, but Trisha still had a couple of days before she would be five. "Yes. Her name is Kira. She said Selene told her to come early in case we needed her." Trisha said proudly. Sabnac picked up both pups and put them on his massive shoulders. The two pups squealed excitedly, looking down at everyone else. "I don't think we could have defeated Achyls if it wasn't for you two," Sabnac said.

I checked my stride as she turned her head. “Collins Parker, your claws have been tracking the young ones across the ice all afternoon,” Patricia murmured, her scent radiating calm support. “Let my old lines assume the watch over the pup for this solstice night.” “My inner fire is still burning high,” I replied, relieving her arms of the bundle. “I can guard his breath for another watch. I watched him finally close his eyes peacefully and a single tear fell from his eyes. I cried my heart out. I couldn't do anything. I couldn't move. It was over.
