A Bitter Marriage Contract
Elizabeth always found everything there very formal; there seemed to be a room for every occasion.
When she was announced, she saw Martha approaching with a cold but polite smile, which surprised Elizabeth; on the few occasions they met, she was always cold and curt with her, just like John.
“Elizabeth, dear, I’m so glad you came,” said Martha, extending her hand in an elegant greeting. “Please, come in.”
“Mrs. Sinclair,” replied Elizabeth, with a restrained smile. “Thank you for the invitation.”
As she took a few more steps, she noticed another woman, elegantly seated on a sofa. Elizabeth’s heart skipped a beat when she recognized Pamela White. All the color drained from her face.
