“Look at her eyes...” “They're different... blue?” “It's more than blue... there's something purple in her irises.” “They're beautiful.” “They're... strange.” Mia blinked, confused, and then saw her reflection in the window of a nearby car. Her eyes were indeed different. They were a vivid blue, with a purple-lilac ring surrounding the iris. They were silver eyes. She knew it the moment she saw them. This wasn't just a reflection of the light or an emotional effect. It was real.

"Just look." I sigh, but my eyes find them quickly. Since they're the only color on my face, it's almost hard to ignore them. My irises have a distinct shade of pale magenta due to an even mixture of pale red and purple. My eyes seem a little redder than normal in the candlelight. I can tell because they seem more purple when I look in the mirror during the day.

Ezra, choosing silence over words, listened intently, realizing she had no answers to the myriad of questions Scarlet presented. A sudden pause hung in the air, and Scarlet's gaze shifted from the plate to Ezra. "I am getting old," she confessed, her eyes distant. "I want you to come back and live with us. I thought to myself, cringing inwardly. My eyes landed on Mirai, who offered me an encouraging smile. Her straight white hair flowed around her, so long, it draped down past her chair. Her eyes, the same platinum white, were tinged with just a hint of darkness where her irises and pupils should be, giving her an air of mystery. She wore a lavender crystal sphere around her neck that glowed faintly from within. I couldn't help but wonder what kind of power resided inside it. I could always feel the energy radiating from it whenever she was nearby. I gave her a nearly imperceptible nod before looking away.

“It shows my reflection… but the eyes are wrong. Blue. Ice blue. And when I flip it over, it says, ‘Nothing is what it seems to be.’” That gets their attention. Even Parker stops rocking his chair. “Magic?” Sonia asks. “Very old magic,” I say, my voice low. “I thought… maybe you should see it too.” I lift the mirror carefully and angle it toward Sonia first. The silver catches the candlelight, glinting faintly. “Here.” She leans forward, brushing her hair away from her face, and peers into it. Her brow furrows. “I don’t see anything.” I blink. “What do you mean?”

It’s a long shot, but I’m not exactly flush with options at the moment. Invidia’s hand illuminates with a purple glow, and with a wave of her hand, the tray that contained my food and water disappears. As I observe her with keen – albeit tired – eyes, I now realise it's not quite the same hue as what I’ve witnessed in other makkares. Makkari magic is emitted as a vibrant shade of violet, but now that I pay closer attention, Invidia’s magic has a darker hue, like a shade of dark indigo. I never thought much of it, but I’m starting to realise the darkness she wields was reflected as clear as day in her magic, and I was too ignorant or complacent to notice.

Zara stared at it, something primal in her blood waking. “This isn’t just a mirror,” she breathed. “No,” Maxim said. “It’s called the Umbraglass. One of the last magical relics from the Age of the Thirteen Clans. It shows truth… and threat.” As she watched, her reflection flickered. Not one Zara—but many. In one, she wore a crown of moonlight. In another, she bled from a wound she couldn't see. One version burned in violet fire. One stood alone.

Nueva pretended to be grumpy and stared at Mira with icy eyes. Mira slowed her steps and looked worried for a moment. "Um, did I do something wrong" she mumbled, and her green eyes flicked nervously between Agnes and Nueva. "I will fill you in later, darling" Agnes pinched Mira's freckled cheek and turned her focus back to Nueva. "To answer your question, Moon Water is susceptible to earthly energy from the Moon. So it can become a talisman, for spells or future rituals."

Taking up the pew right behind us, there was Mama Peju, a few of my previous house mates and Stephen's friends. I turned when Mike squeezed her hand especially tight. "Are you alright?" He whispered solemnly. I frowned in confusion. "Of course. Do I not look alright to you?" My voice sounded absolutely normal, so I had no idea as to what he was getting at "You have a certain look in your eyes. It's like a cracked mirror." He whispered back in reply. "Well, aren't you suddenly the poet?" I snapped. "I am fine, Mike." "I'm just saying. It's okay to cry."
