My heart skipped once. Then again. “Is he safe, Bill?”
“Yes, he is.”
A pause.
“Quincy Laurent is being suspected,” Bill began, the words rolling off his tongue like shards of glass, “of being involved in the recent murders that happened in the east block. Particularly Malik’s case, which is also bleeding into the second suicide — an inmate named Diego San.”
I didn’t respond for a moment. My mind, my blood—everything in me froze. The silence on my end stretched longer than it should have, and Bill didn’t interrupt it. I could hear my pulse behind my ears.
