When Rex’s jaws clamped around his shoulder, the bite connected but darkness oozed instead of blood, curling up Rex’s muzzle like smoke. Rex pulled back, shaking it off with a snarl. Thane’s wolf form shimmered at the edges, almost glitching, as if something else moved beneath his skin. “You bound yourself to her,” Thane’s voice echoed unnaturally, even in wolf form. “You tied your life to the Axis.” Rex lunged again. “I tied myself to what’s mine.” They crashed through a stone pillar.

My senses exploded—Ragnar's musk, laced with pine and fresh blood, cutting through the herbal veil. "Enter," I commanded, my voice booming off the damp walls, extinguishing the sage bundle in a water basin with a hiss. The iron door groaned open, Ragnar lumbering in, his cloak ripped by branches, mud caking his boots that squelched on the stone, a gash on his forearm weeping crimson. He bowed, sweat beading his scarred brow, his breath labored from the run, eyes darting to the altar with wary respect, his massive frame dwarfing the entryway.

Another even bigger warrior lunged at him, claws out, but Ragnar ducked, rolling, coming up with the blade flashing, driving it into the warrior's chest. Their mate bond pulsed stronger between them, guiding their movements, keeping them in sync even in the chaos. “Ragnar, behind you!” Raven howled, spinning to intercept another warrior, but too far to help. Ragnar turned as a massive warrior, twice his size, lunged at him, claws flashing. The world slowed. Ragnar lifted his hand, and the silver light that had flickered before now roared to life, engulfing his arm, crackling like living lightning.

After all, those weapons were truly in leagues of their own. However, she had clearly disregarded the fact that unlike Mjolnir and Gungnir which were made up of both Uru and Devilstone, Harch’s axe head was made entirely out of Devilstone. And the scales of the World Serpent weren’t trivial materials either. Added to the fact that it was tempered by the Chaotic Flame, and not its branched flame like the Eternal Flame of Asgard, this did give Harch the potential to surpass Mjolnir and Gungnir in the future!

Ragnar stood up and hurriedly walked over to meet the old lady. — Mor, mor, have you seen like me, my runes that were there? he asked eagerly. — Runes? — Yes, runes ... I wrote runes on the floor and they have ... —… been accepted, answered the old lady calmly. Ragnar stopped and looked at the old lady. She had her back arched, wore a modest cape, tapering in places. Her cape covered her face and he could only see her mouth whose lips seemed to have been blackened. An amulet hung from her neck. She was leaning on a staff she was holding with both hands, and Ragnar soon realized that her hands were shaking. The old woman must have walked for a long time, he told himself.
