He was sitting in this exact control room, staring into the camera. "If this automated message is playing," the recorded Manji said, his voice perfectly clear over the blaring alarms, "it means our greatest success has finally come home. Welcome to Zenith, Patient Zero. We have been waiting for you." The video paused, the image of Manji’s smiling face frozen on the screen. From the vents above, a thick, white, sweet-smelling gas began to pour into the sealed room.

“Sebastian, say something.” I opened my mouth but nothing came out. My brain had stopped working. "Hey, I'm Naomi." The girl stepped forward, tugging a braid behind her ear as she introduced herself. I didn't miss the way Zaire’s eyes drifted down her thick body. He licked his lips slowly, giving her those eyes that guys gave girls when they liked what they saw. "I'm Zaire." he smiled, flashing her with those grillz in his mouth as he shook her hand for a second too long.

Just one. A single line of green text appeared on the main screen. REBOOT COMPLETE. Then, a second line. HELLO, MOTHER. I stared at the screen. Who are you? I typed. The cursor blinked. I AM ZERO, came the reply. AND I AM EVERYONE. I looked at Zero's body. Her eyes snapped open. They weren't white. And they weren't gold. They were black. Absorbing all light. She sat up. The leather restraints snapped like twine.
