My hands feel impossibly heavy as I reach toward the sink. Slowly. Very slowly. I lift my eyes. And I look. One line. Then— I blink. No. Not one. Two. Two clear lines. My breathing stops. I stare at the test. Maybe I am seeing things. Maybe it is blurry. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. I lean closer. Two lines. Strong. Clear. Impossible to deny. The room suddenly feels too small. Too quiet. And somehow far too loud at the same time. I take a step backward.

Everyone had been told that. He reached over and grabbed at one of the books in the pile, opening it up to a page showing a diagram of a triangle. The lettering looked to be in an old dead language we didn’t use anymore and was one I was no longer very fluent in. Maybe ten years ago I could have done a better job reading this but now too long had passed. I was very rusty… but I gave it my best shot anyway. 'Direct Lineage', the page seemed to say at the top. I frowned trying to decipher the rest but it didn’t make much sense without any background to what I was even looking at.

The scene had been on the schedule for two weeks. Helena had been reading it for two weeks. Not running lines. Not breaking it down technically. Just reading it the way you read something that is sitting too close to you to look at directly. She would get to the middle of page three and put it down. Come back to it an hour later. Get to the same place and put it down again.

A line of text appeared, clear and sharp. Open to page one. Elara used her thumb to flip the cover open. The first page was not blank. Written in a sharp, elegant script were three lines of ink: The board thinks they have the master file, Elara. They are running tests on the floor right now looking for the glitch that broke the server. They do not know that the glitch is not a line of code. It is a meeting.

I sigh and reach for it. Daniel. I pause for a second before opening it. Be ready by 6. Event confirmed. I read it once. Then again. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s exactly what it should be. Clear. Direct. No unnecessary words. Still— something about it feels… different. I tilt my head slightly, reading it again like I’m missing something. I’m not. It’s just— flat. I don’t remember it feeling like that before. Or maybe I just didn’t notice.

A flicker of audio with a missing line, unreadable characters instead of his usual processing code. Not just skipped, but damaged and I stare at it for a long time. Because I know what I heard and if I’m right… it’s not a glitch. It’s a memory.
