“Would you like to read it here? I thought we could go through it together. Just the first few pages.” I hesitated. Then nodded. She pulled her chair closer. Not a lot close to me, but close enough that our knees almost brushed. “I’ll read the first page,” she said, opening the book again. “Then we’ll talk through it.” I tried not to stare at her lips. Tried. She started reading. Her voice was low and steady as she read. “…his fingers slid between her folds, slick with need, and she arched her back like an offering…”

There weren't many toys, but there were plenty of books. "Do you want me to read to you until your dad comes here?" I asked, and she nodded eagerly. "Yes, please." I looked through the books to find one I knew and grabbed a chair and sat next to her on the bed. I had purposefully left the door open so I could hear Ford's footsteps when he was coming. But there were lighter footsteps headed this way as I read the first page. Soon Percy stood beside the bed, "can I join?" I nodded, and he sat beside his sister under the covers. The kids seemed mesmerized as I read to them. I tried to use different voices for different characters, which made them laugh.

As he opened the book, the pages seemed to turn on their own and finally stopped on a particular page and his eyes were drawn to the text and as he traced his fingers on it they words seemed to glow under his touch. The words had come alive almost as if they were speaking to him. Immediately, the energy in the room changed as he began to read the words.

Clara said waving her hands in the air. "Please go on child and forget these two attention seekers," George said to Clara with a smile. Emily and Ragnor exchanged glances upon hearing what George said and turned their gaze to Clara who started reading. "Little Red Riding Hood," Clara began, and Emily grinned. Clara was able to read the whole book pronouncing each word correctly and she did add some acting to it grabbing their attention and making them forget she was reading a children's story. "The end," Clara said with a smile

The room felt warmer somehow, though neither of us had moved closer. I turned the page. “Fine. No nicknames. Yet.” His shoulders dropped a fraction. Relief. He didn’t want the kind that made him feel human. I lifted the book. “Are you sure you want me to read this? It’s kind of boring.” “I want to hear you.” Something hot coiled in the pit of my stomach. I cleared my throat and focused on the words. I read the first paragraph slowly, letting the cadence settle. My voice filled the room, soft and even, just above the quiet of the storm. Mikhail closed his eyes like he was letting the sound sink into him.

I whispered softly, trying to maintain a sense of decorum despite the excitement building inside me. He glanced at me, his gaze lingering for a moment, his eyes searching mine. Then, he turned back to the book, clearing his throat. "Once upon a time, in a land far away..." His rich, velvety voice began to narrate, and I leaned in, hanging on to his every word as he flipped the pages. I was obsessed with the sound of his voice, the way it seemed to wrap around me like a warm blanket. "...And they lived happily ever after. The end." He finished, closing the book with a gentle thud. My mouth was still open in awe, my body buzzing with excitement.

“Why don’t you sit down, and stop pulling at toys okay?” Micah sits down, and she picks up a book. “We will read this one,” she smiles, showing them a book. I take a stroll to the other end, so I can see them all, more so her. The kids sit for a moment, and she begins to read to them, her voice soft, clear, and loud enough for all the kids around her to hear. “I barely read 10 books. Most are too difficult for me to understand.” Ophelia busts out in laughter, the corner of her eyes tearing up. Noah jumped in surprise, taken aback by her sudden laughter. He felt something shift inside him. He turned to stare at his hands as a smile cracked on his lips. The room fell silent as the two children carried on with their reading session. Both of them enjoyed the peaceful silence as their minds escaped to the fairytale land they held in their hands. However, the peace didn’t last as the door slid open.
