The arrow tore through the air with brutal force, aimed straight at my chest. “Doris, no!” Ryder’s voice sounded distant, filled with fear.

Rhys turned toward the knife-wielder, but Gideon—already watching the ridge—moved faster. The arrow came from above, aimed straight for me. I barely had time to register the flash of movement before Gideon shoved me aside, twisting just enough that the arrow sank into his shoulder with a sickening thud. “Gideon!” Gideon staggered back, his hand snapping around the shaft, but the blood that welled out was dark—too dark. Rhys swore violently, lunging toward the archer as rage flared through him. “You son of a—” His sword met the bow before another shot could fire, sending the man tumbling from the ridge.

I look to my left, seeing the usual group of bitches across the way. “Oops.” One of them exclaims with an evil glint in her eyes. “So clumsy of me.” She puts another arrow on the bow, aiming it directly at me, and this time I had enough. They are deliberately trying to harm me and someone innocent. I hand the baby back to its mother before she can even take aim, and shift into Raven. I’m across the way, my wolf throwing the girl to the ground and my claws sink into her shoulders while the girl screams in pain.

“No. They want to use me. They want to break you.” She didn’t let go of him. “Then let’s make sure neither happens.” For a moment, the world seemed to narrow to only that small space between them. Then an arrow slammed into the tree beside her head. Ryder grabbed her waist, dragging her behind him as a second arrow flew, grazing his shoulder. His breath hissed through his teeth, but he didn’t slow. “Keep your head down,” he growled, pulling her into a sprint so fast her feet barely kept up.

Once at the cabin, Robin flops the half dead, frozen and unconscious girl on his bed. Unable to think, he stares at her for a moment, seeing her lay there on his bed, bloodied and torn to shreds of whatever is left of her clothes. The arrow sticking through her. She's pale, deathly pale. Robin gets a shiver down his spine as he wonders who could do something like this to another person.
