HAYLEE ~<>~ While waiting for my test results and Xalen’s return to the palace, I dug into the one book that seemed to have held on to my attention and mind—Cursed in Crimson. Just like Flavia narrated briefly, the first red wolf was quite phenomenal and pitiful. Reading about her felt like torture because I could have sworn I was transported back in time to the era and place she existed. I could have sworn I felt every whip and lash she had to endure, even though she was powerful enough to destroy the entire realm.

It was also getting late as well, but my determination was stronger than any type of disappointment. Flipping through the stacks of books I had found, I stopped at an eye-catching book. It was a glossy red cover and it was titled, “The Red String of Fate”. I don’t know what it was about it, but it drew me to it more than I’ve ever known. It wouldn’t hurt to read it, right? If I was on the right track, it might tell me something about those two.

My grandmother's handwriting was tight and urgent, written during one of her most intense visions. *The darkness awakens. It has slept for a century, gorged on stolen light, but now it stirs again. It will hunt the children of the moon. It will find them one by one and drain them until nothing remains but empty shells. Two wolves stand between salvation and destruction. Allie's whimpers in the background combined with her increased breathing and her rapid heart rate into a kind of macabre soundtrack while I waited for the blood to come. It inched closer and closer, and then it was there, slipping into me like it was coming home. My body went rigid against the restraints at the first hit. I could almost feel my cells expanding, absorbing the nourishment, the power. My skin flushed warm, and I heard pen on paper as Ghost made notes.

Melissa started to raise her voice, as though she had more to say. “Pardon me, Ms. Jenkins, but I’m busy. Goodbye.” The night lights lit up in the city. Many nights ago, I had dreamed of sharing a warm home with Wanda. Yet, she singlehandedly destroyed all those dreams and shattered them to the point of no return. - The project with Surge Technologies was both my touchstone and whetstone. Mr. Jones was very generous with affording me with resources and power, but he did so while keeping a close eye on my performance.

Handing it over to me, his eyes looked gloomy. “You won’t find comfort in these pages,” he said. “But you may just find what you are looking for.” I opened carefully, my fingers trembling and sweaty all of a sudden, the pages smelled old, worn out and ripped off at the edges. On the first page, written in red ink fading and peeling, were the words: “The Blood in Her Name.” “What is this?” I asked, the title multiplying my fears. “An account of wolves born with what we called... dark spirits.” He folded his hands across his chest as he spoke. “Wolves who walked two paths at once, light and darkness, peace and destruction.”

Jade snatched it right from Sophia’s hands, flipping through the pages like it was a joke. “What even is this?” Jade sneered, holding it up. “Some nerdy-ass book Miss Evans gave you? What, you too much of a loser to pick out your own? You need a book to guide you through everything?” Sophia’s blood boiled. She pushed her chair back and stood up, her hands clenched into fists. “Give it back, Jade.” Jade grinned. “Or what? You're gonna cry?” A few of her friends giggled. Sophia took a deep breath, her heart pounding, but she didn’t back down.

“Okay, let’s hear it. Don’t hold anything back.” “I actually liked it!” I admitted. “Red Storm Rising wasn’t like anything I’ve ever read before, but it was pretty good. There was lots of action. It was fast-paced; I can see why you like it. The parts about sabotaging oil production felt relevant even today. I probably wouldn’t read anything else by Tom Clancy, but I’m glad I tried this one.” Andre looked shocked. “You don’t have any criticisms?” “Um. It was kind of silly how the Soviets attacked Iceland first. That didn’t make any sense to me.”

This blood-red light was immensely vast, shooting straight into the sky. Even the radiation clouds above had to make way for it. Within the blood-red light, a tall woman in a crimson gown, wearing a crown, slowly floated upward. When her blood-red eyes casually opened and swept toward Andrew and the others, Andrew felt his heart jolt violently. A tidal surge of dread rose inside him as he realized this woman was impossible to defeat. 'Who… is she?' he wondered.
