I needed answers. Five books in, I found several references to mate rejections in a psychology textbook. They mostly described the reasoning behind rejections, which I didn’t want to read about. I knew all too well why Kael had rejected me. But there were a few useful pieces of information: apparently, fated mate rejections were known to leave long-lasting psychological scars on top of their physical impacts. “Oh, great,” I muttered. “More trauma. Just what I needed.”

He asks. “I’m not sure I understand…” I tell him and he sighs. “Tatum seems pretty scared after being rejected, and she said something about how hard it is for the rejected. How they are branded as damaged, essentially, and then finding a new mate is impossible. Is it really like that?” I don’t know how to answer his question. It’s not a question I have ever had or thought deeply about and now that it’s been posed, I feel like more of a jackass than I ever have.

Mason jested, mischievousness playing along in his voice. I just gave him a blank response in return, causing his smirk to fade. “Or he was very disappointed seeing you as his fated mate because you looked so frail and inadequate.
