Lucas felt his heart leap into his throat as the wolf turned to face the truck, teeth bared and ears back. The tires shrieked in protest against the asphalt, the heavy SUV tilting dangerously as he forced the vehicle off the road. We crashed through a flimsy wooden barrier and plunged straight onto a narrow, winding dirt bypass that ran along the riverbank. Behind us, the sudden, deafening rattle of automatic gunfire erupted, bullets slamming into the armored trunk of our car with heavy, terrifying thuds.
